The Benefits of Asphalt Driveway Paving

Driveway Paving Company NJ

When paving a residential driveway in New Jersey, asphalt paving is one of the most economically viable options available. Moreover, its strength and durability is second to none. An asphalt driveway can stay dark, smooth and aesthetically pleasing for more than ten years without any maintenance. Of course, price may very depending on the scope of your individual paving project, but overall a newly paved driveway will cost only a fraction of what other home improvement projects might, and will both serve a functional purpose and enhance the value of your home.

Paving A New Driveway in New Jersey

This typically only takes up to a few business days. Typically, we’ll take a look online using a program within Google to measure the square footage and see the dimensions of the driveway. A site visit sometimes is necessary to also inspect the condition and make plans for grading, reshaping or other improvements or repairs to the existing surface. Any and all work will need to adhere to New Jersey Residential Site Improvement Standards. Next, there are a few considerations that come into play:

Construction or Repair of the Driveway Foundation

Enough compaction is the prerequisite of the foundation before completing the driveway paving work. Compacting of holes and cracks are integral to the paving task. Any drainage problems should also be addressed.

Pavement Width

Depending on how much space you have to work with, you’ll have to decide the width of your newly paved driveway. We typically recommend at least 8’ wide at minimum, but 10’ as a safer bet to ensure there is enough room to drive and for pedestrians to walk. Ideally, you’ll want your driveway to be paved at least 12’ wide.

Pavement Thickness

An asphalt driveway’s pavement thickness depends on the status of sub-grade soil. For instance, a thickness between 1.5-2 inches might suffice for an asphalt overlay of strong base. However, for a stronger more durable driveway, or in cases where the sub-grade soil is soft, 5-6 inches of full-depth asphalt is necessary for a residential driveway. In some cases, soft sub- grade soil will be replaced with a stronger base. When paving the driveway, Flash Paving always uses NJDOT approved I-5 asphalt.

Pavement Design

Any driveway paving job should pay close attention to a location’s natural properties. That means the overall topography and other landscaping features will come into play. It is important to preserve the rocks and trees around the area to be paved, and evaluate whether a curved or bending driveway works well for the property, or whether a straight design makes more sense.

Driveway Drainage System

The durability and strength of any driveway paving depends on the drainage system. There should not be any stagnant water around pavement edges, nor in the middle of the driveway itself. Existing drainage of adjacent walkways, patios, beds, etc. should be carefully considered and used in combination with driveway drainage. We may need to adjust the grade of different portions of the driveway to ensure there is a sufficient slope for drainage to the appropriate runoff area.

Use A Tack Coat

A tack coat makes it possible for the asphalt overlay to adhere to the surface underneath. Before placing the overlay, it is usually sprayed over a weakening surface. Prior to paving the driveway, this creates a uniform surface.

A tack coat generally uses emulsified asphalt to be placed after cleaning the underlying surface. In case of a thin asphalt overlay, this might be useful.

Resurfacing An Asphalt Driveway

Asphalt Driveway Paving Resurfacing

It is not uncommon in New Jersey for to resurface a residential asphalt driveway. This is a cheaper option than installing a new one all together, and saves you time and money against making continuous repairs over time. The resurfacing process fixes any imperfections in the existing grade, drainage system, etc. and leaves the driveway looking and functioning like new. Driveway resurfacing is a great investment for homeowners planning to sell their property within the relatively near future.
